European Water Castle: The Point of Origin

A drainage divide is defined as the line forming the exterior boundaries of a watershed, catchment, or river basin. It separates neighbouring drainage basins.

A continental drainage divide is the line from where the adjacent drainage basins discharge to the boundaries of the continent. In the case of Europe, one could regard the Mediterranean Sea as Southern border of the continent, the black Sea as Eastern border, and the Atlantic Ocean adjacent to all other continents. So, in theory (and practice), there are only two possible continental drainage divides in Europe: One for the separation towards Asia and one as a divide of waters flowing towards Africa or the Atlantic Ocean (all other continents).

In the picture below, you can see all major drainage divides within Europe.

As you can see on above picture with the major water divides within Europe, there is one single point where water flows to the Mediterranean Sea, Black Sea, and Atlantic Ocean. Did you find it?

Last week I visited this unique point, the European Water Divide, the point of origin of the European Water Castle. Within Europe there is only one single point. A very unique location. It’s a mountain pass called Lunghin between Bivio and Maloja. The hike to reach the point is easy, taking only few hours in a very beautiful landscape.
